We consume food on a daily basis, and many of the fruits and vegetables sold nowadays could contain OC (Organochlorine) and OP (Organophosphorus) pesticides, which can cause adverse health effects. Vegetables such as pak choy, choy sum, kale, spinach and broccoli, and fruits such as apples, peaches and berries are some examples of foods that may contain pesticide residue.

To minimize exposure to harmful residue, it is important to control the pesticides used in food. To address this, SGS Hong Kong has been developing pesticide-testing methods since 2006 in order to meet the market’s demand for safety monitoring of fruits and vegetables. Through our continuous efforts to advance the techniques for pesticide-testing, we are now capable of analyzing 79 OC/OP pesticides in all fruit and vegetable commodities.

Although at present there are no specific pesticide regulations being implemented, the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Cap. 132) stipulates that all food items for sale must be wholesome, unadulterated, and fit for human consumption.

The 79 OC/OP pesticide tests that SGS currently offers are known to be the common pesticide items being checked by the Hong Kong government to monitor pesticide residues in food, in order to better protect the public’s health and safety.
