19/02/08		Life Science		FDA Released a Draft Guideline in Labeling of Dietary Supplement The Dietary Supplement and Non-prescription Drug Consumer Protection Act which is an amendment to the ‘Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic (FFD&C) Act’ had been signed by the President on December 22, 2006. The law amends the former Act with respect to adverse event reporting and recordkeeping for dietary supplements and non-prescription drugs marketed without an approval application.
31/01/08		Consumer Testing		Nutritional Labelling In China In December 2007, the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China has published a new nutritional information panel regulation on prepackaging foods, which will be effective on 1st May 2008. According to the new regulation, Energy plus Protein, Fat, Carbohydrates and Sodium will be the 4 core nutrients on the panel; and food companies are welcome to place other relative nutrients as well. Moreover, nutrients are required to be shown as per “100g” or “100ml” with the Nutrient Reference Values (NRV).
31/01/08		Consumer Testing		Offer on Nutrition Information Labels for Prepackaged Food In January 2008, the Hong Kong Government has once again updated the proposal on Hong Kong Nutrition labeling. The proposing information in the nutrition label included energy plus seven nutrients (7+1) (namely protein, carbohydrate, fat, saturated fat, tans fat, sodium and sugar).

FDA thus works with other government agencies and private sector organizations to help reduce the risk of tampering or other malicious, criminal, or terrorist actions on the food and cosmetic supply. Consumer product safety (especially Food & Cosmetic) is one of FDA’s top priorities. The agency recently released self-assessment tools for cosmetic industry to minimize the risk of intentional contamination of the product.
