While REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals), a comprehensive European Union (EU) chemical policy, officially entered into effect, a central, Helsinki-based European Chemical Agency (ECHA) also started operations on the same day. Prior to pre-registration ended on December 1, 2008, there are only 18 months for the industries to get preparations done in order to comply with the requirements. After that, registration process will begin with other tight deadlines.

13/06/07		Life Science		Is it safe to use toothpaste? Recently, some toothpaste products and raw materials of glycerin containing high levels of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) were found in the markets. Upon chronic exposure to DEG, consumers may suffer from kidney failure, Central Nervous System disorders, respiratory hardness, or even lethal consequences. Unintentional swallowing or ingestion of toothpaste containing DEG is highly concerned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well. Currently, they have issued an import alert to prevent toothpaste products containing the poisonous chemical Diethylene Glycol (DEG) from entering the US.
12/06/07		Life Science		Cosmetic Product Review Report- Your first step to REACH REACH (EC) No. 1907/2006 (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) is a forthcoming chemical regulation in the European Union (EU) with the aim to ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment as well as enhancing innovation of green chemicals. It applies to all chemical substances which are manufactured, imported, placed on the market or used within the EU. This regulation has laid down some specific exemptions, including restrictions requirements and means to transfer information in the supply chain, for cosmetic products as defined by Directive 76/768/EEC. After the regulation enters into force on 1 June 2007, companies will assume new and, in many cases, onerous responsibilities related to the chemicals on its own, in preparation or in article that they manufacture, import, distribute or use in EU. This will be particularly challenging for companies that do not have the expertise to deal with such complex chemical policy.
