SGS Becomes IKEA's First Third-Party Certifier in China and Asia

We are proud to inform you that since November 2009, SGS Hong Kong Ltd is the first testing laboratory to become IKEA’s Third Party Certifier (TPC) for composite wood formaldehyde testing in China and Asia. We can help IKEA’s vendor in complying with the worldwide formaldehyde regulations for wood products shipping to the international market. Earlier on, SGS has also earned the Third-Party Certifier (TPC) status from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for verification of composite wood products to ensure compliance with formaldehyde emission standards set forth in the California State Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM).

13/04/09 Consumer Testing Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF) Concern for Electrical & Electronics product
DMF is already banned for use in the manufacture of goods in the EU, since biocidal products containing DMF are not authorized under the Biocides Directive (98/8/EC). To comply with EU requirement and minimize risk to consumer health, no consumer product placed on the market or made available in the EU should contain DMF.

Since the implementation of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation in June 2007, a number of key provisions have been progressively executed including pre-registration of phase-in substance, the first SVHC (Substances of Very Concern) candidate list of 15 substances and supply chain communication on the safe use of the articles. REACH gives greater responsibility to industry to manage the risks from chemicals and to provide safety information on the substances. 1 June 2009 will be another upcoming compliance date for more provisions. While Directive 76/769/EC will be repealed by restriction provision of the REACH regulation (Annex XVII), the first SVHC list subjected to authorization (Annex XIV) will be duly released. 19/03/09 Consumer Testing Solutions for SVHC Compliance in Reach for Toys and Hardgoods
In October 2008, the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) identified and included 15 Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) in the’ Candidate List’ for authorisation. This list will be expanded when more substances are identified and classified as SVHCs. This inclusion is the first step in the procedure concerning authorisation and has immediate obligations for manufactures, suppliers and importers of substances on their own, in preparations or in articles to communicate in the supply chain.

SGS Hong Kong is pleased to announce that we have been accepted as an accredited laboratory to test children’s metal jewellery products to the ban on lead content using CPSC-CH-E1001-08 ‘Standard Operating Procedure for Determining Total Lead (Pb) in Children Metal Products (Including Children Metal Jewelry)’ under US Public Law 110-314 ‘Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA).
