VOC Testing for Footwear & Textiles

Throughout the manufacturing process of footwear and textile products, VOC is commonly used as cleaners, primers, adhesives and paints.

The following are commonly used solvents in footwear and accessories: Acetone, toluene, ethyl acetate, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, ethanol (ethanol voc emissions), MEK, cyclohexanone, white spirit and petroleum spirit.

Emission of VOC into the environment imposes potential risks to human health, including eye and respiratory tract irritation, headaches and dizziness. Some of these chemicals are suspected or known carcinogens and not recommended to use in the market, such as Benzene, Toluene, Halogenated Carbons (Trichloroethylene, Dichloroethylene).

Related directives for footwear and textiles (voc compliant solvent and low voc adhesive):

  • EC 2005/59/EC Toluene & Trichlorobenzene
  • EU Eco-label for footwear
